About Southend-on-Sea

Southend-on-Sea is a seaside resort town in Essex, England. Often referred to as simply Southend, the town is situated on the north side of the Thames estuary. It is 40 miles east of central London, bordered to the north by Rochford and to the west by Castle Point.

The Southend Pier in Southend-on-Sea is popularly known as the longest pleasure pier in the world. It extends 1.34 miles into the Thames Estuary, and is a Grade II listed building. Straddling the pier entrance is the amusement park called Adventure Island (formerly Peter Pan's Playground). Other attractions include the Focal Point Gallery, a modern art gallery for contemporary and challenging photography and conceptual film work, the Odeon Multiplex at Victoria Circus, the Edwardian Palace Theatre, The Beecroft Art Gallery, Prittlewell Prior, and Leigh Art Trail.

Arriva Buses and First Buses provide reliable, frequent service around Southend. However, operations tend to stop early in the evenings. Taxis need to be booked over the phone, but can also be found at designated taxi ranks. Two National Rail lines serve Southend-on-Sea; Southend Victoria and Southend Central.

Southend-on-Sea Music

Southend Bandstand in Southend-on-Sea's Priory Park is a venue for a series of free music events during the summer. The lineup has included Thundersley Brass Band, Fantazmajazz, John Seeley's Jazz and Saxophone Group, Essex Concert Band, and Harmonie Concert Band.

The town's three major venues are The Riga Club, Chinnerys, and the Cliffs Pavilion. Other regular live music venues in Southend-on-Sea include Ambleside Social Club on Ambleside Drive, The Papillon on Marine Parade, The Park Tavern on London Road, and The Woodcutters Arms on Eastwood Road. At some point the centre of Southend's music scene was Junk Club, which was predominantly located in the basement of The Royal Hotel from 2001 to 2006. It was credited for spearheading the Southend Scene; bands linked with the scene include These New Puritans, The Violets, The Horrors, Ipso Facto, and Neils Children.
