About Kingston upon Thames

Kingston upon Thames, or simply Kingston, is the main town of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. The ancient market town is located 10 miles southwest of Charing Cross and approximately 10 metres above sea level. It is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan.

At the heart of Kingston upon Thames is the unique sight of twelve disused telephone boxes toppled over one another in a domino-like effect. This well-known sculpture is called Out of Order and was created by David Mach. Another interesting attraction of the town is the River Thames itself, Kingston's main open space. There is a footpath that runs along the banks, and it is possible to go on a relaxing river cruise. Watersports are also popular in Kingston, such as rowing, sailing, skiffing, punting, swimming, kayaking, and canoeing. Kingston's other attractions include the Kingston Museum, the independent shops on Old London Road, Rose Theatre, and the Bentall Centre for shopping.

The Kingston railway station and the trains serving it are operated by South West Trains. There are two buses nearby: Kingston Cromwell Road bus station is 100 metres east, while Kingston Fairfield bus station is 200m to the south.

Kingston upon Thames Music

Kingston upon Thames is home to several choral societies, such as the Kingston Orpheus Choir, the Kingston Choral Society, the Kingston Philharmonia, and the Kingston and District Chamber Music Society. All Saints Church, a historic parish church of the town, hosts classical choral and music concerts.

The Kingston upon Thames Musical Festival Society founded the Kingston-upon-Thames Festival of The Performing Arts, to provide individuals within a range of ages and abilities with the opportunity to perform in music, dance, and speech categories. The festival initially lasted only 5 days when it was founded in 1932, but is now held over a month until the Final Concert in December.
