  • Women couldn’t join the ballet until 1681 because they weren’t allowed to dance in public before then.
  • Ballet dancers wear pointe shoes to help them dance on their toes. The shoes go through so much wear that they don’t last long. A professional ballerina can go through 100 to 120 pairs of pointe shoes in one season!
  • The first professional female ballerina was Mademoiselle De Lafontaine, a French ballerina who was the lead in at least 19 productions at the Paris Opera between 1681 and 1693.
