About Brixton

Brixton, formerly Brixistane, is a London district in the borough of Lambeth in south London. A series of Brixton murals by local artists can be seen throughout the area, depicting politics, community, and ideas. Though many are in a state of disrepair, some such as the Slade Gardens Mural, Stockwell War Memorial, Brixton Academy Mural, and the Original Windmill Mural can still be seen. Brixton is the unofficial capital of the British African-Caribbean community in London due to approximately 24 percent of the population being of African or Caribbean descent.

Religious sites in Brixton include Christian churches like the Grade II listed St Matthew's Church on Brixton Green, which was one of the "Waterloo churches" built in celebration of Britain's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. Another is Christ Church on Brixton Road in Lambeth SW9, an Art Nouveau and Byzantine Revival Grade II listed building. In Gresham Road is the Masjid ibn Taymeeyah, or Brixton Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre for Islamic worshippers. Other places to visit are The Chocolate Museum, The Ritzy Cinema, and Stockwell Skatepark.

The nearest London Underground station is Brixton tube station on the Victoria line, while the nearest National Rail station is Brixton railway station on the Chatham Main Line from London Victoria to Orpington and beyond. Several London Buses also operate in the area.

Brixton Music

Brixton is known for its thriving clubbing and live music scene, and for being a forefront in the UK Grime/Hip hop and Road Rap. As such, music venues are plentiful - Electric Brixton, for example, is a large club that constantly features live music and club nights and can accommodate up to 1500 people. Night club Brixton Jamm only holds 600 people, and the entertainment alternates between the live music of Brixton Live and club nights of Jamm Club. O2 Academy Brixton is a concert space and one of the leading music venues in London. Brixton Academy, as it is often referred to as, has been awarded as the venue of the year twelve consecutive times in the annual NME Awards, as well as Music Week Award for Venue of the Year. Past performers at Brixton Academy include Madonna, Iron Maiden, Sex Pistols, Nine Inch Nails, and The Smiths.

Brixton was the birthplace of one of the best-selling music artists in the world, the legendary David Bowie. Other notable artists born in Brixton include lead vocalist of British band Faithless, Maxi Jazz, bassist of punk rock band The Clash, Paul Simonon, and singer, songwriter and the sole member of former synthpop duo La Roux, Elly Jackson.
