Singing Trivia

  • The vocal folds of adult men and women differ from each other. Adult men have larger folds, while women have smaller folds. The difference in vocal folds causes the difference in vocal pitch.
  • The oldest known recording of a human voice is a 10-second clip of a woman singing Au Clair de la Lune, a French folk song.
  • A singer loses up to 30% of their breath support when sitting down, as opposed to standing while singing.
  • Singing can lower stress levels, clear sinuses, strengthen the immune system, release endorphins, and even help stop snoring and sleep apnea.
  • Only a very small percentage of the human population is actually tone deaf.
  • Most people have vocal range of over one octave. There are effective exercises in order to expand one’s vocal range.

About Southampton

Southampton is a port city on the south coast of England. It is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, and is approximately 75 miles south-west of London and 19 miles north-west of Portsmouth.

Southampton contains the longest surviving stretch of medieval walls in the country. The city has numerous museums, such as Southampton Maritime Museum, Tudor House Museum, the Medieval Merchant's House, and the SeaCity Museum. The city hosts one of the two major annual boat shows in the United Kingdom: the Southampton Boat Show. Southamptons other attractions include the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton City Art Gallery, Millais Gallery, East Street Shopping Centre, and The Bargate Monument Gallery.

Southampton Central is the main railway station serving the city, which despite its name lies some distance from the city centre. It is managed by South West Trains and is on the Wessex Main Line, South Western Main Line, and the West Coastway Line. There is also a good network of bus services radiating from the city, with some cross-city routes. A CityLink shuttle bus provides free service from Central Station to Red Ferry terminal.

Southampton Music

Southampton boasts of two large live music venues: the Mayflower Theatre and the Guildhall. The Mayflower Theatre, formerly known as Gaumont Theatre, is a Grade II listed building city centre with a seating capacity of over 2,300. The Guildhall is part of the larger O2 Guildhall Southampton, a multipurpose venue located within the Civic Centre. The Guildhall has hosted several renowned music artists such as The Killers, The Kaiser Chiefs, Amy Winehouse, All Time Low, David Bowie, and Pink Floyd, as well as classical concerts by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the City of Southampton Orchestra, the Southampton Philharmonic Choir, Southampton Concert Orchestra, and Southampton Choral Society. Smaller venues in Southampton presenting live music include The Brook on Portswood Road, The Joiners on St Mary Street, The Talking Heads on The Polygon, and Platform Tavern on Town Quay.

The city is the birthplace of several musicians like Coldplay drummer Will Champion, RnB singer Craig David, and singer/songwriter Howard Jones, who has been described by AllMusic (later became All Media Network) as "one of the defining figures of mid-80s synth pop". Band of Skulls, Bury Tomorrow, Heart in Hand, and Kids Can't Fly are a few of the bands that were formed in Southampton.
